april 2009 brings yet another redesign to interview magazine, a mere seven months since its last overhaul. co-editorial director fabien baron and creative director karl templar are out and parisian art team M/M are in as the new co-creative directors.

the transition has not been an easy one for readers. april, featuring a zac efron cover was the first issue to host the whimsical art direction of M/M, however the fashion shoots, most likely conducted before the change was decided, feature the severe photography and fashion styling associated with baron and templar. while the may issue with emma watson feels more uniform, with a full transition to cute and pretty, there is still a huge disconnect. i would think that typically readers spend little time thinking about the art direction of a magazine. that's a good thing. the best books just flow (ie vogue). but here, regardless of what one might think of any of the recent designs, we have a book that has changed its entire image three times in less than twelve months. the look of a magazine is arguably more important than the words (how many people just flip through vs. actually read). with such drastic changes, one has to ask the questions, "what is interview" and "who is its reader"?

it is important to remember that a magazine exists as a business (to make money) and therefor financial factors were certainly in play in all of the changes. this fact sparks an entirely different question. after two redesigns, two editorial staff conversions, and most importantly two huge pr pushes (the party at the under construction standard in september and the glen o'brien daily cover during february fashion week) is interview anything more than it was under longtime editorial team sandra brandt and ingrid sischy? are there any new readers? does it have any more influence in the marketplace? does it sell any more ads?

the only people still questioning the genius of gossip girl are those who have yet to watch two episodes in a row. once you can follow the story lines, and more importantly the incredibly self aware dark humor, there is no turning back. many media outlets, most notably new york magazine, offer a continuous and diligent commentary on the show, its plots, its characters, even its locations. but for me, there is a much bigger issue at hand.

these kids are boring in real life. consider mischa barton or shannen doherty. mischa shows up on the OC and the next month she is wearing chanel haute couture and dating brandon davis (at the time it was fabulous). shannen started a public fight with television legend aaron spelling and went on to hit her boyfriend with a car. when are blake, leighton, chase, etc going to do something notable? there really is no excuse. first and foremost, they have the privilege of living in new york, which not only has more offerings than LA, but also has an independent and obsessed media bubble. mischa could never get the cover of the LA Times, but blake could have the post in a second. all she has to do is stumble out of beatrice one night with sean avery. instead, they spend their time almost exclusively together and at places like brother jimmys. they are like a bunch of wisconsin grads living on 33rd street. it's annoying.

so here is my open request to the cast of gossip girl. you are all young/hot/sought after. befriend some celebrities/designers/socials/athletes. serial date selected celebrities/socials/athletes. become a muse for selected designers. go out more. become regulars at rose bar and beatrice. attend openings/fashion shows/charity events. get crazy. stay out past 4:00AM. show up in page six/hopefully a few post covers. take what new york has to offer. (shannen and mischa can tell you - it does not last forever)

if you know me, you know my fondness for reality television. last year with the help of some equally bored roommates i feel in love with bravo's make me a supermodel, which surprised no one when it failed to make a supermodel. why i am back for season two i cannot answer. even co-host nicki taylor had the brains to abandon such a pathetic proposition.

even in the current "economic times," the New York fashion week schedule was as full as ever. it was quite nice that Dillen & Co, a new line of menswear, chose to distinguish itself from the pack, and hold its presentation after the madness with a private dinner. the line accomplished a feat impossible for many a designer; offering tailored jackers, trousers, and overcoats that make you look not only great, but also comfortable. the cut was slim but realistic and the fabrication screamed luxury without being fussy.

thank god for E!'s the soup. without it i would have lived my life missing out on such great reality programs as parking wars, rehab: party at the hardrock, and most recently harlem heights. if possible, and based mostly on the fact that it is a copy of something not very good to begin with, harlem heights is more pathetic than the city. and up in harlem we have to here how fabulous their lives are all episode long. to the cast: if you stop saying it so much, i might believe you.

the FEED bag is a wonderful idea - eliminate the waste of plastic bags while supporting the crisis of global hunger. however, recently i have had a problem with the way its founder, Lauren Bush, is always carrying the bag. to the grocery store, to work, with your laptop, around down - i can buy that. but when she shows up to black tie events in a full ball gown and the feed bag (in its clutch version) - enough is enough. not to say i can't understand why she does it. lauren is often photographed, and every time it raises the profile of the FEED bag. but one can be charitable and bring attention to a cause without pimping it out. what goes best with a ralph lauren ball gown someone may ask me. not sure, depends on the dress, but definitely not a burlap clutch that can be unzipped into a tote bag.

Fur. Slave to fashion much? Whether you've had it for a few years, or you bought it because of the recent onslaught of carcass on the runway, making a big statement is important to you. Luxury is never just a little thing. What goes best with fur someone may ask? Louboutins, Gold jewelry, professional blowouts. While you may not have gotten your hands on one yet, a crocodile Birkin is your ultimate goal. I hope dinner at Da Silvano is good tonight.

Leather. The dead of winter is a little cold for your choice. It's OK, you're tough. Or you think it helps you look tough. Don't worry, I won't tell anyone you got your bowler hat at rag&bone and your keffiya at Urban Outfitters. And I also won't tell that you are not a DJ/model/artist. How come you don't want to take it off inside; everyone wants to see your new flannel. The more zippers and buttons the jacket has, the worse it is. And I cannot even discuss the blazer version.

Puffer. It is so ugly that it's cool? Sorry, that may work with Gucci ready to wear, but not with a down jacket. It's below freezing outside? Wear a sweater. We are in the city. Maybe when hiking around your estate in Woodstock we can let it slide, but as long as you are south of the Bronx, dress like it. There are plenty of other warm options that don't make you look like a bouncer in Chelsea. Oh, and those that own a version that goes below the knee and/or has a fur trimmed hood, please just stay inside.

Pea Coat. Classic choice, however not very original. And neither is the rest of your ensemble, the Ralph Lauren cable knit cashmere, the selvage denim, the Converse. Sometime you have to take a risk. And a stripped beanie does not count. Did your coat come from the Army/Navy store? Or Prada? If you answered the former, those plastic buttons with the anchors - they look like shit. If you answered the latter, almost no one can tell the difference.

enjoy a first look of balenciaga f/w09. it was hard for me to image how ghesquiere could ever move away from the brilliant latex foam fabric of last year while still pushing the house forward with consistency. though i am not sure how or why, these looks, from this morning's show, do just that. they just make sense. also--who doesn't love a good animal print? (elbaz's lanvin showed us that fact last season) the ever evolving balenciaga is once again on top.

last night i braved the cold, with my good friend samantha, to check out the latest opening at the Dactyl Foundation in soho. when i received the invitation, i knew nothing about jeremy kost, but after seeing his show he has earned a new follower. the crowd was made up of friends and fans who all seemed into the quirky presentation. i think i like the "storytelling though polaroids" more than the "photo in multiple parts," but either would be fun to have in your apartment.

the show is open through March 21 from 7:00PM-9:30PM at the Dactyl Foundation, 64 Grand Street.

the relevance of armani

there was a time - i've read about it - when giorgio armani was the vision of fashion and the arbiter of taste. with the recent opening of armani/5th avenue in new york, a multilevel, almost department store, that houses the many faces of armani under one roof, i cannot but help to consider the brand's relevance today. armani is a huge company, it has multiple lines, licenses, fragrances, not to mention 90 look runway shows.

but beyond its size and presence i find it hard to identify armani's place in fashion today. it seems to lack an identity. i cannot think of anyone who lusts after the armani item of the season. (that shopper is going to balenciaga, givenchy, ysl) i also cannot really think of an item that is the armani speciality, much like chanel monopolizes the stereotype market for a suit or an evening bag. some would say that modern always has been the armani thing. but that niche has clearly been replaced by raf simon's jil sander, or even narciso rodriguez.

tomas maier to wainscott

tomas maier, bottega veneta designer and shopkeeper extraordinaire, will be bringing a branch of his rapidly multiplying eponymous named stores to wainscott this summer. the original outpost in miami provides a nice alternative in a city where most stores revolve around logo denim and bejeweled halter tops. stock includes, among other things, maier's own line of cashmere and bathing attire, his favorite books and dvds, dinh van and marni jewelry, mariage freres tea, diptyque candles, and of course bottega knot clutches and sunglasses. the store is curated with a discerning eye and put together in a beautiful atmosphere. i would have to say it holds a place in my top five favorite shops in the world. maier has a great respect for environment and i cannot wait to see what he has planned for the the east end. my only questions is, while all of this will certainly fit in more than it does in miami, will it stand out?

the burberry collection hit the nail on the head based on a wearability aspect. these clothes will look great on the streets of new york next november. christopher bailey really understands both directional fashion and giving people what they want to wear.

of course there is no questioning the genius or coolness of raf simon's jil sander. as amazing as these clothes look in picture i can not wait to see them in person on crosby street. the fabrics and the construction are fresh, different, and very 21st century. i can only hope that people will want to wear this as much as the burberry. it might not be as easy, but if you can kill it, you have got to go for it.

i love an olsen as much as any other card carrying member of my generation. unlike other celebrities of their age they seem educated, cultured, and interesting. they obviously have great style and it is with no question that people look to them for inspiration. however, until they have something new to say, they should stop doing magazine interviews. they were child stars, they grew up, they found themselves, mk dabbles in acting that interests her, they both love clothes, they are working girls (the row, elizabeth&james), bicoastal, very busy. this same story has been told to W, Harper's Bazaar, Marie Claire, Nylon (twice-once for each twin), and most recently Interview. i understand that they do not want to share the intimate details of their private life with the public, so they have this form story. that's fine. i respect that. but when they show up on a cover i get excited for something new, which is never there. and while i will never be over them, i'm over the story. if they are going to keep doing interviews, they have to give us something new.

The culture of Yves Saint Laurent came to a close this week with the Christie's/Piere Berge sponsored auction of the collection it took a lifetime to assemble. Of course YSL the brand still exists and Stefano Pilati has done an excellent job reinterpreting the house into something relevant for today. This is a feet not to be discounted, as many other designers and houses find this impossible to do (Ungaro, Halston, Helmut Lang). Where Pilati finds his ideas and references I am not sure, but it is safe to say that Yves was influenced tremendously by art (Mondrian and Picasso to name an obvious few). As featured in the January Vanity Fair, his collection was so big, tables held 20 objects and walls held 40 paintings. And it ranged from old world masters, to found objects. Many were worried that the auction was at the wrong time, that the collections would be undervalued, and that established values for similar pieces in others auctions in the future would be low. However in great testament to his legacy the collection now holds the world records for the most valuable private collection ever sold at auction and the most valuable auction in the history of Europe. $266 million. While on some level I am disappointed that Berge chose to break up the collection, and I would have preferred for it to become a museum run by the French government (there can never be enough of those), I understand his motives both emotional and practical. I only wish I could have had a seat at the Grand Palais in Paris this week.

Subway advertising isn’t exactly genius, but it may have reached a new low. I know what you are thinking, and it’s not Dr. Zizmor, although he may be in the running. Today I saw an ad for FlatRate moving, which must be trying to market itself to a clientele that probably, as I did, finds their movers on craigslist. According to FlatRate, so called hipsters have only four reasons as to why they may be moving, gentrification, proximity to a music venue, writer’s block, or artistic differences. Similarly, their only expected destinations are Williamsburg, Bushwick, Greenpoint, or Fort Greene. Where did this advertising agency come from? Is this really what Madison Avenue thinks of the situation below 14^th Street? That everyone has flannel and Freud collections? This campaign has got to go down, with Clear Pepsi, in that book of bad ideas from over worked and under creative advertising executives. Call me a naysayer but typically you don’t want to mock your target clientele. A friend told me she has seen ads from the same campaign in reference to other stereotypes, most notably a “West Village Move.” I don’t know exactly what that one says, but I’m not yet over the “Hipster Move.” Good thing I can have FlatRate IT set up my Internet, so I don’t have to miss a beat bloging about it again tomorrow.

a few months ago i went away to my family's house in florida where i ended up finding a huge stash of old records from the 50s to the 80s. above is my new record player, from ion audio, which not only has excellent sound, but also allows you to convert the vinyl into a digital file on your computer or direct to your ipod. see--we can even use new technology to better old technology.

these are some of my vinyls. the above picture contains my current favorites from the florida stash. the below are my first two new vinyl purchases.

the thing about the record player, is that it is really all about commitment. unlike the ipod player (my other source of sound) there are no playlists or shuffle. you can't just go online and buy one song. the whole process is fun; from setting up the system, to shopping for vinyls, to the sound. and for most young people, and i am saying this first hand, it makes you hear and think about music in a way you never have before.

has it really come to this?

Paris' Hector Guimard Art Nouveau metro entrances have always captivated my attention. They are something that millions of people walk by everyday, yet rarely anyone takes the time to pay a second glance. Many would say that they do not fit with their surroundings (something that is generally so important to Paris), but their details (the typeset, the red lights, the balustrades) are both striking and beautiful. I like to think of the contrast between the industrial utility and the fine art design.

because kelly cutrone is the 2nd most entertaining person on the show i feel i need to credit her sentence structure in my opinion on "the city." (maybe she was even the most entertaining in tonight's 23 minutes; but only because they limited o.p. to one measly scene where once again she has to deal with insufferable task dishing out advice that whitney ignores)

i would like to say that this show is good, but it's not.

on another note, and almost a bigger question in regards to mtv's monday night line up... do "the city" and "daddy's girls" have ANY overlap in viewership?
